Rooted in film (as the 20th century’s great myth and dream system embedded in consciousness in so many fragments that no one knows where the images and phrases that self-invention builds on actually come from), The Menaced Assassin is a novel of incessant mutation of plot and character, its shards drawn from the authors’ own early film (and other cultural) mania.

Out there, things are already in progress: the everyday narrative of events, objects, air currents, suicides, telephone poles, secret documents, is busy inventing more-or-less the same city it invented yesterday. While those inside, gossiping in the warm and quiet courtyard or smoking small but powerful cigarettes in deep green chairs in fairly large yellow rooms, are filled with the usual sentimental and ruthless longings.
